Athletic cycle tour along the River Moselle

Flowing through France, Germany and Luxembourg, the Moselle passes through three countries with well-known winegrowing regions. Enjoy the international flair of the historically rich landscape, the different mentality and culinary delights. Ancient towns and villages lie along the route which runs flatly along the river banks. Due to the longer daily stages involved in this tour of the Moselle Cycle Path a certain level of basic fitness is required.

Day 1
Metz

Individual Arrival in Metz

Enjoy the flair of the capital of Lorraine. Once a Celtic settlement, the town was developed by the Romans and in the Early Middle Ages was bigger and more important than Paris. As a diocesan town from the Reformation onwards, Metz experienced a turbulent history between Germany and France. St Stephen’s Cathedral is the most visible symbol of the town. Booked rental bicycles are available for collection in your hotel.

Day 2

Metz - Perl, approx. 30 km + train trip or approx. 65 km

The first stage of this route, which you can shorten by taking the train to Thionville (not included), leads you through Lorraine,  along the French part of the Moselle. Thionville is another larger town along the route before you continue on through the rural area near the border. The route up to now was very flat but from here on the first hills of the Luxembourgish and Pfalz Uplands appear along the riverbanks.

Day 3
Treves

Perl - Treves, approx. 50 km

Today you can choose between the German or Luxembourgish banks of the Moselle. Both banks are beautiful, but the Luxembourgish side is a little livelier. The wine on both sides is however of excellent quality. Near Konz the Saar enters the Moselle and thus begins a new section of the Moselle near Treves.

In Trittenheim, wine lovers and connoisseurs are in for treat as you can stroll around the informative vineyard path and learn all there is to know about winegrowing. You will then be able to taste a little of the exquisite wine in Neumagen-Dhron.

Continuing on along the Moselle you will pass through Kröv with its famous “Kröver Nacktarsch” vineyard before coming to Traben-Trarbach. Day 6
Traben-Trarbach

Traben-Trarbach - Cochem, approx. 55 km

Passing through Zell, which is well-known for its "Zeller Schwarze Katz", you will continue on to Beilstein, the “Sleeping Beauty of the Moselle”. The village is really similar to that of a storybook landscape! The village has changed little over the past few centuries, retaining its medieval flair. Soon you will reach Cochem, which is surrounded by rolling, wooded hills. Home to the red Moselle-Weinbergpfirsichs, the town has a picturesque centre and the old Imperial Castle attracts visitors year after year.

As you will have improved your level of fitness during the course of the holiday a detour to the well-known Eltz Fortress is recommended.  Or why not finish off your holiday relaxing in the Old Town of Koblenz?
