This museum was first opened in 1839 to showcase the sculpture and artwork collections of local patrons, which along with the history of the town are still on view today. The museum attained great significance due to the German annexation of Lothringen in 1870 and the regeneration and extension of the town which was associated with this. Impressive archaeological finds were made during construction and these were the foundation for the impressive collection of the history museum focussing on the Gallo-Romanic and Merovingian Epochs.
