The Museum supported by departmental funding has its foundations in the baronial collections, which were amassed at the beginning of the 19th century. The collection focused on painting in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1975 the collection was extended to include art from the 20th century such as Pop Art, Minimalism, New Realism etc. Objects from Celtic, Roman and Merovingian times, as well as a coin collection round of the museum’s collection which has been housed in the modern building since 1992.
